A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

Firefighters were called to a property in Howarth Street, Mangapapa, on Saturday night after sheds caught fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted at around 11.15pm.

“A single garage shed and a small adjoining shed were well involved in fire when we arrived,” a senior firefighter said.

“Both were pretty much destroyed in the blaze.”

The fire crews stopped the flames from reaching the nearby residence.

“They were able to cut the fire off and it didn’t threaten the home,” specialist fire investigator Derek Goodwin said.“We would call it a very good save.”

The sheds contained a range of household electrical appliances.

“The exact cause at this stage remains undetermined, but it appears to have been caused by some sort of electrical fault,” Mr Goodwin said.

“It does not appear to have been suspicious.”
