NZ Herald Morning Headlines | The Finance Minister will meet with fuel importers today and relief could be on the way for households - as the petrol panic continues.

Hourly convoys on State Highway 2 through Waioweka Gorge will be removed on Monday.

NZ Transport Agency said crews had made progress at the Goldsmith slip site with the spider digger completing work at the top of the gully, allowing night works to begin from March 23.

“This is a strong step forward in providing less restrictive access through the gorge,” the agency said today.

“It will significantly increase productivity and allow the road to remain open during the day under stop/go traffic management, without the need for convoy movements.”

It said there was still loose material on the slope, and the road could close again at short notice if conditions changed.

Drivers were thanked for their patience and encouraged to plan ahead and follow all onsite instructions.

From March 23:

  • Hourly convoys will be removed
  • The road will be open daily from 6am to 8pm
  • Traffic will operate under stop/go traffic management
  • Spotters will continue to monitor the slip area
  • Motorists should expect delays of up to 1 hour
