A light standard next to The Bottle Shop on the corner of Palmerston Rd and Bright Street near Gisborne’s city centre fell over this afternoon.

Bottle store staff said they heard a bang about 3.10pm and a customer came in and told them the pole at the corner had toppled.

They understood no one was injured or had a near miss, and they rang the Gisborne District Council to report the incident.

The staff members said the pole had been on a bit of a lean for a day or two.

Council staff are investigating.
