A bus carrying school children was involved in the crash near Gisborne this morning.

A bus carrying school children was involved in a serious crash near Gisborne this morning.

Emergency services were sent to the two-vehicle crash that closed Wharerata Rd (State Highway 2) at Matawhero just after 7.50am.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said three people, two in serious condition and one in moderate condition, were being taken to Gisborne Hospital.

A police spokesman said it appeared the bus was carrying school children but no injuries reported related to those on the bus.

NZ Transport Agency said at 10.30am the road had reopened.
