Nearly 800 people reported feeling a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on the East Coast of the North Island on Sunday morning.

The earthquake occurred at 9.19am, 25km west of Te Araroa in the Gisborne District.

It was 32km deep and caused what GeoNet described as “moderate” shaking.

Geonet received 794 “Felt reports” from the public, the majority of which were rated as the lowest severity “weak”.

One person rated the shaking as “extreme”, three as “strong”, 56 as “moderate”, 250 as “light” and 484 as “weak”.
