Contractors have barricaded the troublesome slip site between Kotemaori and Putorino and put in other safety measures as the highway remains open at that point.

A major slip came down at the weekend on State Highway 2 south and geotechnical assessment has been done.

“Sunday’s slip site has been barricaded and there is traffic management in place, including traffic lights, and a speed restriction,” Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency’s Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti system manager Martin Colditz said yesterday.

“The traffic flow has been steady since the road reopened. We are in a position to keep the single lane open at the reduced speed.

“The safety of everyone using the road and our crews on-site is of paramount importance,” he said.

“Understandably a lot of people have been keen to get through as quickly as possible and we’re continuing to remind people to drive to the conditions, expect delays and be respectful of the crews on site.”
