A woman and her young son received a shock yesterday when the engine of the car they were in caught fire at roadworks in Wainui.
The woman had stopped at the roadworks on Okitu Bridge at about 1.30pm when smoke was seen billowing from the engine compartment.
“The stop-go operator
saw the smoke and told the driver it looked like the engine of her Nissan Bluebird car was overheating,” said a senior firefighter who attended.
“The woman and her young son got out of the car and then it caught fire.”
Roadworks crews used a couple of fire extinguishers to try to contain the fire.
