Road crews handling the mammoth recovery work on East Coast roads have made good progress, according to Gisborne District Council. This aerial picture shows damage to SH35 at Hicks Bay.

Gisborne District Council reports “good progress” on road recovery after this week’s rain with more roads set to reopen as floodwaters drain away.

Latest figures from the council show that out of 34 local roads closed, 11 had reopened.

“As floodwaters continue to recede, we’re confident more will reopen,” the GDC said on Thursday night.

“Please keep checking our website for the latest, most up-to-date information https://www.gdc.govt.nz/services/roads/road-information.”

State Highway 35 has reopened from Ōkitu to Tikitiki.

“Please take care. There will be a lot of traffic management in place due to damage.”

SH35 remains closed from Tikitiki to Potaka due to significant damage, including multiple landslides.

SH2 from Ormond to Matawai reopened Thursday night.

“Even where roads are open we strongly encourage people to avoid travel if you can — especially overnight,” the council said.

“Roads remain saturated and are vulnerable to slips, washouts and soft shoulders.

“Thanks for your patience and for keeping safety front of mind.”
