Quick action by a resident nipped a potential house fire in the bud on Sunday afternoon at a home in Glenroy Road at Whangara.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent crews from Gisborne and Tolaga Bay to the property at 3.35pm.

“A small electrical fire had started in a switch in the wall controlling power to the oven,” a senior firefighter said.

“A resident grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out before it could take hold.”

The senior firefighter said the damage was confined to the wall and the switch.

“Fortunately the resident’s quick actions prevented a bigger problem from occurring.”

The fire crews made sure the fire was out and the situation was safe.
