Restoration work is nearing completion on the tauihi (canoe prow carving) Tūranga Whakamana at Gisborne’s Heipipi Endeavour Park.
Work on the carving began in December.
“The totara carving element has been restored”, said Pene Walsh, the cultural activities manager for the Gisborne District Council.
“The plinth surface andsurround is currently undergoing repair works by experts and the footpath adjacent to the artwork is to undergo levelling work soon.”
She described the work as a “vital step in preserving the region’s cultural heritage”.

What has become a landmark at the historical site of Heipipi Village at the Gladstone Rd Bridge end of town, next to the courthouse, was gifted to the people of Gisborne in 1990.
It was designed by Te Aturangi Nepia-Clamp and Tā Derek Lardelli, carved by Nepia-Clamp and Bill Baker, and unveiled and blessed in 1990 as part of the 150-year commemoration of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
