The Cancer Society’s flagship event – Relay for Life – is returning for 2026 and will be held at Showgrounds Park over the weekend of March 14-15.

It will be the 11th Relay for Life event in Gisborne and with 60 campsites available, another sellout is expected as the Cancer Society eyes a fundraising goal of $135,000.

Every day, 77 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer.

“The Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society understands the impact this can have, not just on the individual, but on their wider whānau, friends and workplace networks as well as the community as a whole,” Cancer Society fundraising and events co-ordinator Shay Podjursky said.

“The Relay for Life is back for another year in an effort to do our bit to reduce the incidence and impact that those cancer diagnoses have across our community.

“We are incredibly proud to be able to host this event each year and it wouldn’t be possible without the outstanding support we receive from those around the district.”

Podjursky said the main focus this year was on the Cancer Society’s founding pillars – celebrate, remember, fight back.

“Despite all Relay for Life events being an active reflection of their own local community, they all contain the same three ceremonies during the event, regardless of where in the world you are taking part.

  • “Celebrating those who have or have had cancer and the incredible people who have supported them during our opening ceremony.”
  • “Taking a moment to pause and reflect during our candlelight ceremony, where we remember those who have passed from cancer.”
  • “Concluding the event on Sunday morning with the commitment to continue the fightback against cancer through research, fundraising and community awareness across all generations - from prevention to screening and treatment.”

Those who have or have had cancer and a support person are invited to RSVP their name and contact details to the Cancer Society to take part in the opening lap and celebration lunch.

The special first lap is walked only by those who have experienced cancer and those who have supported them before moving into the dedicated marquee zone for lunch.

“While there is no cost to add your name to this lap, for catering purposes we do need to know who is joining for this particular part regardless of whether you are in a registered team or just coming as a visitor,” Podjursky said.

Those interested can contact Trudy McNeil at Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society on (06)8671795 for more details and to add their name to the list.

Teams are encouraged to register now for Relay for Life before the early bird pricing expires on February 16.

Registration is $150 for a team of 10 and $15 for additional team members. That increases to $200 a team and $20 each additional person from February 16.

The fee covers a team’s camping space, goodie bag, dedicated fundraising page via the website and access to spot prizes, team prizes, personal lap timing and a full entertainment stage across the weekend.

“A fundraising goal of around $2500 per team is encouraged so as to share the load, and we have a wide range of support and ideas available for anyone that wants a little extra support,” Podjursky said.

“With just six weeks to go until the big weekend, now is the time to get ready for what promises to be the best 24-hour event in town.”
