Erosion Control Turihaua/Pouawa

Erosion Control Turihaua/Pouawa

Erosion protection work is due to start at Turihaua and further work is being considered at Pouawa.

Both sites are on State Highway 35 and are managed by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

“At this stage, there is no work being started at Pouawa. However, resilience work for that stretch of SH35 is currently being considered,” a Waka Kotahi spokesman told The Gisborne Herald.

“Just to the south, work will soon get under way at Turihaua Point.

“Contractors are moving rocks onsite ahead of the start of construction.

“As part of that work, contractors will be constructing a rock revetment wall at Turihaua Point.

“This is in addition to work recently to replace a rockfall fence at Tatapouri hill.

“These projects help to improve the safety and resilience of the area,” the spokesman said.

Both are Gisborne District Council-managed seasonal camping spots.

While Pouawa is open for camping this summer, Turihaua Point will remain closed due to the severity of the erosion at the site.
