One person has died after a serious crash in Tairāwhiti.

Emergency services went to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Whāngārā on State Highway 35 about 6.05pm on Sunday.

Police confirmed a person was found dead at the crash site.

Three people were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries and two with moderate injuries, police said.

The road was initially closed near Glenroy Rd, but has since reopened as of 1am this morning according to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
