A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

PASSERSBY acted swiftly yesterday afternoon to help a man working under a stationwagon, when the vehicle suddenly came down on top of him.

It happened in the council's Grey Street carpark at around 4pm.

“The vehicle was jacked up while the man did some repairs underneath it, and it came down, pinning him underneath,” a senior firefighter said.

“The person with him screamed for help, and passersby rushed over.

“They were able to lift the car off the man sufficiently for him to wriggle free.”

The senior firefighter said the man was able to walk to the St John ambulance that was called to the scene, and he was taken to hospital for a check-up.

Police were also called to the incident.
