2 people injured in weekend fatal crash now stable in Waikato Hospital

Two of the young men injured in a fatal crash Tucker Rd at Makauri over the weekend were flown to Waikato Hospital on Monday for further care.

Four were injured in the crash that killed two about 11.40pm on Saturday.

“The people in the car were all young males aged 15-19,” said Detective Sergeant Tim Somerton.

“Our inquiries are still in the early stages, but we understand they were on the way home when the crash occurred.”

Their vehicle went out of control in wet conditions, rolled, hit a tree and came to rest in a roadside drain.

The young men were all out of the vehicle when the emergency services arrived.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene.

Of the others, one was critically injured, another seriously injured, and the others were moderate and minor.

“The two flown to Waikato have been listed as being in stable condition,” Somerton said.

“We are not in a position to release the names of the deceased at this time, as next of kin have not all been informed.

“If anyone knows anything about this incident, or who has CCTV footage on their dashcam please contact us.

“They can call us on the l05 number or call into the Gisborne city police station.”
