A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

An earthquake on a fault beneath Ngatapa might have disturbed light sleepers yesterday morning, a day after a similar quake near Matawai.

Yesterday morning’s light shake lasted no more than 5-10 seconds at 4.31am and was recorded at magnitude 2.9.

It was centred 23 kilometres below Ngatapa.

On Thursday afternoon, at 2.42pm a magnitude 3.0 quake occurred at a depth of 32km, 25km west of Matawai.

Just half a dozen people reported feeling the tremors to GeoNet.
