Primary healthcare nurses and other associated staff held stopwork meetings in Gisborne and around the county today to discuss their employment contracts which see them get paid less than their hospital colleagues.
More than 3400 primary health care nurses and medical receptionists/administrators across more than 500 practices stopped work for
two hours nationwide after mediation to settle their multi-employer collective agreement (MECA) negotiations failed.
Nurses employed under the Primary Health Care collective agreement are paid up to 10.6 percent less than nurses who work for district health boards.
The nurses say the system is unfair as they have the same qualifications and experience and perform similar work.
There is also a concern the living wage is not currently paid to all medical receptionists/administrators.
