The Matawhero saleyards drew a total yarding of around 750 head yesterday in the monthly Cattle Fair. Sales commentator Trevor Brown said most were sold at recent values.

The first pen of 35  two- year steers, from Waitangi Terrace Station at Kanakanaia, sold for $1410, weighing 371 kg, selling at $3.80 per kg.  Their heaviest four steers sold separately for $1545,($3.19/kg).  They weighed 485 kg.

“There were few quality cattle offered and most pens contained small numbers,” Mr Brown said.

“Most cattle were showing the effects of a hard winter.  Many cattle were sold to Hawke’s Bay buyers.”

Price details across the sale will be in Saturday’s Focus on the Land.
