September is World Alzheimer's Month and as part of it the Town Clock will be lit up in purple.

Alzheimers Gisborne Tairawhiti is once again faced with finding ways to celebrate this special month while surrounded by Covid restrictions.

The Gisborne Hospital-based team, managed by Tracy Robinson, are grateful to Gisborne District Council for agreeing to turn the Town Clock purple tomorrow.

Purple is the theme colour for all Alzheimers New Zealand's publicity campaigns.

In addition, a small group of Alzheimers Gisborne Tairawhiti clients will gather in purple attire next Wednesday for a cup of tea and cake, “with purple icing of course”, Tracy says.

“Other businesses around town are also showing their support by hosting a staff morning tea with a special teapot in which donations can be put to support the continuation of the work of Alzheimers Gisborne Tairawhiti.

“This event is called Cuppa for a Cause and is a way for remembering people with dementia and support the work of our local society who work specifically with people with dementia, along with offering support for their families.”

Anyone interested in hosting Cuppa for a Cause can contact Tracy on 867-0752 for more information or to get a teapot and promotional material dropped off to them.

Another event, the annual Memory Walk, will take place on Sunday, October 31.

“This is a time for everyone in Gisborne to remember those who have or who have had dementia. It is estimated that one in four of us knows someone in our family or workplace who has been affected by the disease.

“You can choose from one of two walks — a nine-kilometre one starting at The Pines at Okitu and a shorter one of about two kilometres around the town bridges.

“Both conclude in the carpark at Mitre10 for prizegiving.”

Prizes include a $200 coffee voucher for the largest corporate team, mystery prizes for the largest whanau team and a prize for the best-dressed person wearing purple.
