Police making progress in party homicide case

A month on from the deaths of two men at a birthday party in Elgin, the man heading the homicide inquiry into the tragedy says police continue to make “solid progress” in their investigation.

Kane Te Paa and Chrysler Stevens-Mark died following a fight at the party on Lytton Road near Birrell Street on March 23.

“Forensic analysis of all items gathered during the investigation to date, including a knife located at the scene, is ongoing.” Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said.

“This is a complex investigation and we need to ensure we are methodical in order to get justice for the two victims and their whānau, who we have maintained regular contact with.”

Two other men sustained injuries in the incident and were hospitalised.

One of the two men arrested was also in hospital for a while.

“The two men charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, in relation to one of the injured victims, have been remanded on electronic bail to reappear in Gisborne District Court on May 27,” Det Insp de Lange said. “A decision on further charges will be made once the forensic analysis has been completed, and all other information has been assessed.”
