The spokesman for Right to Life has waded back into the discussion on the End of Life Choice Bill, currently before the Justice Select Committee, on the coat-tail of the submission by the Disability Commissioner. It’s a shame he didn’t actually read the bill before bursting into print. His statement
is full of misinformation and fearmongering, not the least of which is the appalling statement “there is nothing in the bill that would prevent a doctor from offering a lethal injection or assisted suicide to a disabled person”.
For starters, no doctor would be offering anything. The request for assisted dying must come from the person. No one else.
I read the comments posted on Stuff after the news item of the commissioner’s submission. You should have a look at them Mr Orr. You will see that many disabled people are relieved that should they find themselves in the situation in which an application could be made under this bill, they could do so. The bill contains no discrimination either for or against people with a disability, and to suggest that it does is patently false.
