Gisborne District Council has issued 190 camping permits so far since the seasonal camping season started at Labour Weekend.

Each of the permits entitles campers to occupy a particular site for 28 days.

Pouawa and Turihaua Beach have been well used again.

Turihaua Point remains closed due to erosion at the site.

Permits can be obtained free of charge via the council’s website or by visiting the council offices on Fitzherbert Street or in Te Puia Springs.

Council liveable communities director Michele Frey said at the start of the camping season that the most important thing for everyone to remember before they go camping was to apply for a camping permit.

“Please remember, if you are enjoying our beautiful camping spots this summer to take all rubbish and recyclables with you when you leave your campsite.

“These need to be taken to the nearest transfer station as there is no collection from seasonal camping areas.

“Open fires are not allowed in camping areas either.”

Doneraille Park and Waihau Beach/Loisels have also been closed for seasonal camping this year due to damage and erosion after multiple severe weather events this year.

Seasonal camping closes on April 30 next year.
