Opinion
The Therapeutic Products Bill is open for submissions. Although around half of New Zealanders use safe, effective natural health products, rongoa Maori, supplements, herbs etc, very few people are aware of how this bill may affect access to these products.
The bill will create a “Regulator” whose job it willbe to make “secondary legislation” (rules) about which ingredients may be used, and a regulatory structure involving fees to register products and their ingredients. These rules are not yet written so there is no knowing what they will be.
MPs will be voting on a bill whose content will not be clear until after it has been voted on. This in itself is undemocratic.
The end result of the bill will likely be increases in cost for these products. Small-scale manufacturers will likely be unable to afford the compliance costs and will go out of business.
I encourage everyone who has an interest in natural health products to research the bill, make submissions to the Select Committee by March 5th, and write to your MP.
