War memorials around the region have been cleaned in preparation for the Anzac Day commemorations later this month.

Gisborne District Council liveable communities director Michele Frey said cleaning and caring for the many monuments, statues and cenotaphs in the region was all a part of the work the council does to keep Tairāwhiti beautiful.

“Security fencing will remain around the Cenotaph in town to ensure it’s kept in good condition ahead of the ceremonies planned for Anzac Day.

“Our contractors will do some final cleaning such as sweeping and grass mowing around the monuments in the week before the 25th,” she said.

“The recent works help to inform future work to repair and maintain these monuments as well as others within the region.”
