Builders at Gisborne’s Randall Construction are celebrating a win at a prestigious design competition.

The company picked up a Gold award and category win in the Renovation $750,000 to $1.5 million category at the recent Master Builders House of the Year competition awards in Palmerston North.

The judges’ citation said the renovated Ormond property had good bones but needed to be completely re-clad and re-roofed while inside, the ceilings and walls needed to be re-lined.

“Fortunately, the building team was up to the challenge. Things are off to a great start on the exterior with the addition of gables and new black James Hardie Linea weatherboard and tongue-and-groove cedar cladding. Cedar is also used to great effect at the back of the house to create a large covered outdoor space which connects to the garden. Inside, the transformation is just as dramatic, with vaulted ceilings, scissor trusses and skylights creating a feeling of height and spaciousness.

“The open-plan kitchen, dining and living area features Tasmanian blackwood flooring and glass sliders connect inside and out. Bi-fold windows in the kitchen ensure it’s easy to cater for barbecues, while the large scullery keeps things tidy. Two sizeable bedrooms and a laundry complete the ground floor but up the floating timber-tread stairs lies the main bedroom with its roomy walk-in wardrobe and tiled ensuite.”

A Gold award is presented when achieving 90 percent or more of judges’ marks.

Randall Construction director Paul Randall said the house was clad in a combination of cedar shiplap and linea weatherboard.

“Inside features South island-grown Tasmanian blackwood floors throughout, and existing blockwalls were honed to create feature walls.

The build took around 10 months.

“I’d just like to thank owner and sub contractors. It was a great competition to enter as it lets you know where you at with your standard of building compared to other builders.”
