Fire and Emergency New Zealand opened the doors of Gisborne Fire Station to the public on Saturday in what was hailed an “extremely successful” open day.
Hundreds of people of all ages attended and enjoyed the experience in perfect weather.
“Our motor vehicle accident and Bronto skylift demonstrations drew goodcrowds,” an FENZ spokeswoman said.
“There was great community participation in our home fire safety messaging, with several prizes won of home fire safety visits, fire safety packs— including fire extinguishers — fire blankets and smoke alarms.
“It was a wonderful opportunity for the community to interact with our firefighters and see what we do, climb into our fire trucks, and engage with us outside of emergencies.”
Hato Hone St John took part as well, showing the integral relationship it has with FENZ as joint responders.
“It was a chance for us to show the public what we require from them to keep their homes safe, including keeping accessways clear enough to fit appliances through with real time applications,” the spokeswoman said.
“Our Tairāwhiti Fire and Emergency Facebook page is the first port of call for important advisories, updates on safety messages and any community events we and our rural brigades commit to.”
