House at risk when fire destroys vehicle in carport

A vehicle parked in a carport at a house in Fleming Street in Kaiti was destroyed in a fire last night. The fire is being treated as suspicious.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent two crews to the property at 7pm last night.

“The car, an XR6 Falcon sedan, was fully involved in fire when we arrived,” a senior firefighter said.

“The occupants for the house couldn't tackle the fire themselves — it got too big for them.

“Flames threatened the nearby house, and there was some damage to the exterior of the building.”

The car was destroyed in the fire, the senior firefighter said.

The cause is being treated as suspicious and police have an inquiry under way.

No one was injured in the incident.

At 8pm last night FENZ sent firefighters to the West Lake Hotel on the corner of Gladstone Road and Peel Street in response to an oven fire.

It set off alarms inside the building and the complex was evacuated.

The fire was contained to the oven and was out when the fire crews arrived.
