A charity event on Halloween will be going to the dogs.

Harry and Sam pet boutique and grooming salon has organised the “Howl-o-ween” fundraiser for Gisborne nonprofit organisation Mutts and Moggies.

“It’s a Halloween party for you and your furry friends,” says event organiser Kirstie Lovell.

“There will be a dog parade where owners and dogs will show off their amazing costumes — a family-friendly dress-up competition with judges selecting the funniest, scariest, most original and best pet and owner costume combination.

“There will also be a free photo shoot with a Harry and Sam’s photographer for you and your dog, plus a ‘bark-a-que’, hosted by Mutts and Moggies, for humans and dogs.”

Those without a dog can join in the fun in support of the cause, says Ms Lovell.

Mutts and Moggies is a nonprofit organisation that helps animals through de-sexing and finding them ‘fur-ever’ homes.

All of its proceeds directly benefit the animals including vet care and vaccinations.

Mutts and Moggies volunteer Manuella Stettler said when Kirstie posed the idea of “Howl-o-ween”, she was thrilled.

“My partner, our friend and I have been volunteers for the past two years.

“Over that period of time we have rehomed 120 dogs, mainly out of the Gisborne pound.

“We adopt dogs from the pound, assess them and, in most cases, desex them with the help of the Fred Lewis Foundation.

“I can’t wait to see all the costumes and I bet I wont stop saying ‘awwwww’ the whole time.”

Ms Lovell stressed that dogs at the Howl-o-ween event must be child and dog-friendly.

“Make sure your dogs are leashed, under control at all times, registered and that their vaccinations are up to date.”

Prizes range from free boarding for a week, a photography session, an exclusive handmade dog collar lead set of your choice, a tray of high-quality petfood and lots of spot prizes.
