An event that was to feature young Gisborne DJ Jamil Śabda (Jamil Weiss dos Santos) has been transformed into a tribute to him.

He was found dead earlier this month after an extensive search following his disappearance the night of January 2.

After playing the Longline Classic festival at Labour Weekend, P. Digsss (Paora Apera), the frontman for popular Kiwi drum and bass band Shapeshifter, decided to return to play in Gisborne in the summer.

For this solo performance, he invited Jamil and BrazilBeat Soundsystem to be his support acts.

P. Digsss selected Smash Palace as the venue and named the event Good Spirits. Tickets went on sale late December for the February 13 gig.

“Since tragedy struck, taking the life of Jamil at only 22 years of age, the fate of the event was uncertain,” Jamil’s mother Mara Weiss said.

It was finally decided by all involved that it should proceed as a tribute to him, a young man who was just starting a promising career in music.

Local DJ and radio personality Dizfunk (CJ Houkamau) will stand in for him in the line-up.

P.Digsss’s solo show as a DJ/MC is a more intimate experience involving music that has inspired him over his lifetime and his favourite tracks of the moment.

People can expect a broad selection of bass-heavy, danceable sounds from reggae, hip-hop and funk through to drum and bass.

BrazilBeat Soundsystem, made up of Jamil’s parents Nego Beto and Weiss, recently released a new song - Cuppa - featuring Sophie Gilbertson and DJ SuperGran, aka Molly Pardoe, who made her debut as the oldest performer in the history of the Rhythm and Vines music festival at age 81 in December.

The track was the culmination of the DJ SuperGran charity project at Rhythm and Vines, of which Jamil was an integral part.

Cuppa is available on all major streaming and download platforms. All revenues and proceeds from the song go to SuperGrans Tairāwhiti, which provides food aid and life skills education to low-income individuals and families.
