YOUNG Gisborne motocross riders are preparing for the 2019 NZ Mini MX Nationals at Hastings this weekend.

Jaxon Pardoe, 8, has been riding since he was four years old.

Competing in the 50cc 6-8 years class on his KTM, Jaxon aims to get into the top five at the nationals.

He has had a good 2019 season, coming first overall in the Gisborne motocross series (65cc), first in the Taupo series and sitting first on points in the Bay of Plenty series with one round to go.

Jaxon has been a consistent top-five competitor in the past year.

Seasoned racer Brendon Fogarty said Jaxon’s cornering speed and jumping ability would be “a force to be reckoned with” against the nation’s best 50cc riders.

Lila Murphy, 8, has been racing for just the past nine months.

Competing in the 7-9 years trail class on a Honda CRF 70, Lila aims to make the top 10 at nationals.

“Her grit and determination and aggressive style will see her battling hard with the other riders in her class,” Fogarty said.

Jack Murphy, 6, will race his KTM 50cc in the 6-8 years class and he aims to finish in the top 20.

He was first overall in his class in the Gisborne series this year.

Jack has been racing for 18 months.

“He is a level-headed and consistent rider and doesn’t crack easily under pressure,” Fogarty said.

Jaxon and Jack will both face a bit of pressure because the numbers in their event mean they will have to go through qualifying.

Atawhai Wirepa-Hei, 6, has been riding since he was 4.

He will ride a KTM mini 50cc bike in the 4-7 years introductory class.

Atawhai aims to finish in the top five at nationals and was this year third in the Gisborne series and second at Taupo.

“His jumping ability is outstanding and it usually sees him make up crucial time around the track,” said Fogarty.
