“First Light Marathon boosts the economy by bringing masses of entrants, support crews, whānau and spectators into our region to enjoy its iconic weather, places and people. It’s the perfect mix of active living and local hospitality.”
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said this first tranche of funding set the stage for an exciting year.
“This is just the start, offering something for hundreds of thousands of fans and visitors, along with a big boost to New Zealand’s economy.
“Major events don’t just attract visitors – they inject life and energy into cities and towns, creating vibrant communities and unforgettable experiences,” Upston said.
The major events and tourism package will support more than 70 events nationwide.
Specific figures were not released from the first round of funding, which totalled more than $5m across 22 recipients in three funding categories – Events Attraction Package (three recipients), Events Boost Fund (17) and event marketing campaigns (two).
The 2025 First Light Marathon featured more than 330 runners and walkers, including a group of 72 international participants who chose the event’s full package, which included a five-day stay in Gisborne.
