Firefighters made it in time to stop a potentially serious fire taking hold at a scrap metal yard in Banks Street in the industrial subdivision on Monday morning.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent crews to the property at around 11.30am.

“It was started as a result of some hot metalwork involving a gas cutting torch, with sparks setting light to a trail of fuel that ignited and spread to vehicles stacked in the yard,” a senior firefighter said.

“We used a couple of hose reels to tackle it, and had it out before it could take hold.

“It was lucky the crews were able to get it under control so quickly,” he said.

“We’ve seen fires in scrap metal yards in other parts of the country that have got away.

They’ve been major events and have proven difficult to put out.”

No one was injured in the incident.
