Showgrounds Park opened its gates this morning to what was set to be an outstanding annual Spring Show, blessed by fine weather.

Sunny skies greeted the opening day of the equestrian competition yesterday and the sun was forecast to keep on keeping on this morning.

“As long as we keep getting this golden stuff from the sky we’ll have a great Show,” Poverty Bay A&P Association president Simon Bousfield said yesterday.

The forecast was for fine weather today and tomorrow with daytime highs of 22 degrees  and north-westerly winds.

“Everyone got in early yesterday to put the finishing touches on it and the Show’s looking really good,” Mr Bousfield said.

He was picking that the public  would be out there early this morning.

Another well-attended A&P Breakfast was held this morning in the shearing pavilion, where the guest speaker was the colourful broadcaster, MC, public speaker and storyteller Brodie Kane.

This is Mr Bousfield’s first year as Show president.

“The whole team and I, we’re all excited,” he said.

“Given the hard years we’ve had recently for the Show with wet weather and Covid, this weekend looks perfect, ideal for the event,” he said.

“We’ve got awesome trades sites and exhibitors.

“Mahons Amusements in Sideshow Alley are all set up and they’ve got some impressive rides again this year.

“There’s something out here for everyone.”

A feature today will be the Bullarama bull riding event late this afternoon in the centre ring.

“We’re expecting good numbers of people to attend the Show on Day 1 today.”
