A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

I write in support of Vietnam veteran Wally Te Ua regarding his letter concerning Long Tan and the comrades he represents (Gis Herald, August 16). They have “become the inheritors of the mantle”. It is true, they “answered the call to duty”, and returned home from that conflict as reviled returned servicemen and women.

Time has a way of healing, and the veterans deserve that healing from the public that scorned them so long ago. Now there are new wars for the young to fight, scarring new generations. What do we learn from wars and destruction?

Nuclear annihilation is a ticking time bomb. Lunatics are in control of our world, and we are powerless. What can we do but enjoy whatever we have and try not to hurt anyone while we do it?

The Book of Revelations and its predictions are coming true faster than we will admit. Scoff if you must, but the signs can be seen, even if you are not a prophet.
