The Wainui Store in Oneroa Road has closed.

Liz and John Woods bought the business four years ago and initially closed it late last year after being unable to sell it.

“Sorry to say this but as the current owners we are today finally closing the shop,” Mr Woods said in a Facebook post yesterday.

“Precipitated by Covid-19 but mainly by our failure to find a buyer for the business after difficulties in obtaining consent for assignment of our lease to new owners.”

Mr Woods told The Gisborne Herald: “It's very, very sad. It's an end of an era.

“It has been managed by various owners and has such a long history.

“We thought this business had an important role in the community.

“We wish to thank the Wainui Beach community for your support over the years of our ownership.”

Mr Woods mowed the lawns for the last time yesterday as the lease ends today.

“Now it's time for us to go into retirement.”

In response to an update by Mr and Mrs Woods on the Wainui Store Facebook page, many customers expressed their sadness and thanks for the service they provided.

Wainui resident David Timbs said: “Thank you for providing our community with a great space, good vibes and excellent service.

“You will be part of Wainui history and you certainly made a positive difference.”
