Driveway fatality after man hit by car in Wainui

A man has died in Gisborne Hospital after he was struck by a car as he walked along the footpath in Moana Road at the northern end of Wainui Beach.

The incident happened at around 12.20pm on Saturday, opposite the Whales grave.

“The man, aged 70, was struck by a car reversing out of a driveway,” an emergency services spokesman said.

“The man, who lived locally, suffered critical head injuries.”

He was taken to Gisborne Hospital by St John ambulance.

Police reported the man died in hospital on Sunday.

State Highway 35 was closed at the scene of the incident as police began a serious crash inquiry.

“Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing,” police said.

Fire and Emergency NZ also attended the incident.

At the time The Herald went to print last night the name of the man had not yet been released by police.
