Matawai dog triallist Samantha Shaw has qualified two dogs for the finals of the zig-zag hunt at the New Zealand championships at the Warepa Collie Club grounds near Balclutha.

She and Rogue yesterday finished in third place in the South Island championships in Event 3.

They had a strong qualifying run score of 97.75 points out of 100, just 0.25 of a point behind second place and half a point behind South Island title winner Clark Chrystal from Waikoau (Hawke’s Bay).

Samantha’s other dog, Lottie, placed sixth in the South Island event with a score of 97.

Both dogs now go into the New Zealand championship final.

Wairoa’s David Scragg was tipped out of the top seven in Event 4 — the straight hunt — after having two dogs on the leaderboard yesterday morning, one of them for most of the week.

Both dogs bowed out in the second morning session yesterday.
