A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

At this solemn time of Anzac we remember the fallen — those that sacrificed and paid with their lives.

The sacrifice continues as “ELDER ABUSE” infests our society with despicable acts.

Our friend, relative and Vietnam veteran “Larry” Rangiwai was one of the fallen struck down by a despicable act. Larry’s comrades who served, marched and worked with him are still in shock from his death.

Captain Wally Te Ua, a Vietnam survivor of “Agent Orange” poison, advises that “elder abuse” is rife in Tairawhiti and is afflicting servicemen and women now too frail or dependent to protect themselves. Low-life types are hurting our elders.

IT MUST STOP. WE MUST REPORT THEM!

Do not let Larry’s death be just another “elder abuse” statistic.

In the words of the song: “You caught a war bird in Vietnam, fought your enemy all around, cross rice paddy, jungle, orange rain coming down.”

The enemy is no longer in Vietnam or the jungle. For many elders, the enemy is in the home.
