Multiple people are injured after a serious crash in Gisborne.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Centennial Marine Drive about 4.40pm.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the road headed towards Midway Beach.

Police said ambulances are on the scene providing medical attention and the Serious Crash Unit has been informed.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of the crash at 4.36pm, responding with multiple vehicles, including one helicopter and three ambulances.

A spokesman said five patients were assessed at the scene, with one patient transported to Gisborne Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition and four others transported in a moderate condition.
