Danger flags flown after ‘massive’ surf

Surf lifeguards put up the danger flags at Wainui and Tolaga Bay beaches yesterday after “massive” surf caused dangerous rips and currents at these locations.

The south-easterly swell featured wave faces of 3.5 metres at these beaches and throughout the East Coast on beaches exposed to that swell direction.

“It was massive surf,” regional lifeguard supervisor Andrew Shelton said. “It was very difficult for the lifeguards to find safe swimming areas for flagged areas so it was decided to fly the danger flags.

“The lifeguards stayed on duty, with IRBs on standby in case any one got into trouble.”

Mr Shelton said the cooler weather helped yesterday, with beach numbers down considerably.

“That made it a lot easier for the lifeguards. While there were no rescues the guards were still busy keeping the public informed and safe.”

The surf was more moderate at the city beaches.

“Guards at Midway and Waikanae beaches were able to position safe flagged swimming areas,” Mr Shelton said. “We are expecting the swell to hang around again today, though it is supposed to clean up a bit.”

■ Police were alerted yesterday after a report a diver was missing in the sea at Hicks Bay. The diver later surfaced and was OK, so the alarm was called off.
