Hauora Tairawhiti's Medical Officer of Health Dr Osman David Mansoor says Eastland Port is following national guidelines for managing the crew of ships docking in Gisborne during Covid-19.
These national guidelines have been in place since Alert Level 4 and have not changed with the country's move to Level 1.
He is comfortable that the risk of Covid-19 entering Tairawhiti via the ships is negligible.
Maritime crew are only allowed into New Zealand if they have had a 14-day quarantine on the ship.
“I want to remind people to prevent the spread of respiratory infection, including Covid-19, by limiting their close contacts and to maintain good hygiene (hand-washing, respiratory etiquette, and stay home when sick),” said Dr Mansoor's.
