Firefighters were called to a vegetation fire on the side of the road on Panikau Road just past Whangara yesterday afternoon, but it was under control.
The call came in at 2pm.
Fire and Emergency NZ responded with an appliance and tanker from Gisborne, along with a rural fire manager
and a rural crew.
“The roadside fire involved some slash residents were burning but it was under control and no action was necessary,” a senior firefighter said.
“There was also a burn-off in a nearby forest block, but that was also under control.
