Civil Defence warns Te Karaka residents to self evacuate

Tairawhiti Civil Defence have warned residents at Te Karaka to evacuate.

A text message alert said the Waipaoa River level was at 7.3m, with the evacuation level for Te Karaka being 7.5m.

“If you live by a river and you’re concerned, please make a decision to evacuate during daylight hours," Tairāwhiti Emergency Management Manager Ben Green said.

“Rivers are already very high in our region and could reach evacuation thresholds.

“The water table is also very high in our region and this extra rain over the weekend will cause surface flooding.

“Our roads are still fragile and we ask everyone to please take extra care and drive to the conditions.

“Please also watch for land movement on your property as we have already had reports of landslips around the city.”

Earlier today, the MetService has extended the region's Severe Weather Warning through to midday, Sunday.

The forecast is for a prolonged period of rain, which is expected to be heavy at times.

"Expect 250 to 350mm of rain to accumulate about and north of Tolaga Bay, 150 to 200mm of rain about the ranges farther south, and 50 to 100mm of rain about coastal areas south of Tolaga Bay.

"These amounts are in addition to the rain that has already fallen. Thunderstorms possible. Peak rates of 15 to 25mm/h.

Due to flooding, State Highway 2 is closed from Matawai to Te Karaka. No detour is available - road users are asked to delay travel or use an alternative route.

After being closed overnight, State Highway 35 is now open. Road users are advised to drive with caution along this route.
