A balmy autumn day provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable Diversity Express train ride to Muriwai on the vintage Wa165 locomotive steam engine on Saturday.

Hosted by Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council (TMC), the event was a gesture of gratitude to the supporters and volunteers who stood by the community, offering unwavering support and assistance after the devastating cyclone and weather events of 2023.

Invited attendees enjoyed a scenic journey aboard the steam train while sharing the joy and making new connections.

A delicious hot meal awaited them at the end of the line in Muriwai.

Among the invited guests was Dr Angela Lim, the chief executive and founder of Clearhead — an organisation committed to making personalised mental health and wellbeing support accessible to everyone.

She gave an insightful speech in which she stressed the importance of self-care for volunteers to prevent burnout.

Her message resonated deeply with the audience, highlighting the vital role of self-preservation in sustaining community support efforts.

TMC president Arish Naresh also took the opportunity to express appreciation to the volunteers for their consistent support of multicultural events. He highlighted the significance of unity and mutual support within the community.

Geoff Joyce, of Gisborne City Vintage Railway, added to the occasion with a speech in which he shared the rich history of the Wa165 train while emphasising the need for new volunteers to ensure the continuation of the vintage rail programme.

The event concluded on a high note, with attendees expressing gratitude for the chance to come together and celebrate the spirit of diversity and community resilience.

TMC thanked all participants and is looking forward to its annual Colour Run For Diversity to be held next month.
