A caravan parked on an unoccupied property at the corner of Pickering Street and Dalton Street in Kaiti was set on fire last night in what is being treated as an arson.

Fire and Emergency NZ was called to the vacant property at around 11pm.

“The caravan, which we understand was full of rubbish, was fully involved in fire when we got there,” a senior firefighter said.

“It was destroyed and an adjacent garage on the property sustained some minor damage. The house was OK.”

Police have an inquiry under way.
