New police dog Abel has been on the beat in Gisborne for three weeks and handler Sergeant Warren Sangster believes the three-year-old German Shepherd will prove very “able” indeed.
“I have had him since he was eight weeks old and now my other dog Hera has retired from patrol work,
Abel is ready to start work.
"He has done three courses at the police dog training centre at Trentham and passed with flying colours.
"We have had a few jobs together since he started on the beat three weeks ago and he has done his job well.”
If required, Hera will still be used for search and rescue, and victim recovery work.
