A report of a possible body floating in the water off the eastern end of Makorori Beach yesterday turned out to be craypot buoys.

Police called out the district's water rescue services after the reported sighting at around 1.30pm.

The Character Roofing surf lifesaving emergency call-out squad were called in while the Lion Foundation Coastguard crew were put on standby.

“There were three cray buoys floating about 400-to-500 metres off the beach at the settlement end of Makorori,” a call-out squad spokeswoman said.

“The police wanted us to make sure there was no one in distress.

“There was a bit of chop on the surface of the water and it was hard to see from shore what the objects were.”
