IN THE second of two concerts designed to showcase young musicians, outstanding young cellist Matthias Balzat performs at Tiromoana on Saturday.
Balzat will play works by Brahms, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, Piatti, Rachmaninoff, Kapustin and New Zealand composer Gareth Farr.
His accompanist will be his mother Vivian Balzat.
Balzat began learning thecello at the age of three, and was trained through the Suzuki method, a system based on language acquisition theory.
Suzuki method philosophy includes saturation in the musical community, listening to recordings of professional musicians in the home every day and avoidance of musical aptitude tests or auditions to begin music study,
As a 14-year-old, Balzat began his Bachelor of Music Performance degree at Waikato University.
He graduated in 2017 with honours.
