DEEP GROOVES: Artist/musician Paulus McKinnon taps into the tradition of hand drawn band poster with a 1960s psychedelic aesthetic for bass guitar-based band Subset BC’s gig on Saturday. Picture supplied
The deep-groove smooth of bass guitar-driven Subset BC’s loungy rhythms isn’t 1960s psychedelia as we know it but the psychedelic aesthetic of the poster design for the five-piece’s upcoming Dome show suits the band’s general vibe, says artist/musician Paulus McKinnon.
He also just happens to dig the 60s poster style.
“I’m a fan of graphic style poster design from mid-20th century onwards, so that’s part of the inspiration,” he says.
“As a signwriter/designer I love to play with type too and the original is hand drawn in the manner of many a good band poster.”
Made up of three bass guitarists — McKinnon, Ryan Raggett and Charles Barrie, keyboard player Matt Tong and drummer Lincoln Wright, Subset BC draws from musical influences that include funk, breaks, desert-sludge, post-rock, shoe-gaze, house and drum and bass.
