A SERVING of spicy jambalaya full of mystery meat is promised by dapper swing band Wellington City Shake-’em-On-Downers when they perform at the Dome on Saturday.
With a mix of swinging brass, big double bass beats and creamy guitar to drive the New Orleans jazz, swing, jive and bop, thedapper act delivers an upbeat performance. The band describes its energetic sound as “inspired by the New Orleans of yesterday and the New Zealand of tomorrow.”
Creamy is a lively tune written by the “singular torrent of testosterone that is our bassist, Robert Henderson” while Ain’t No Sin to Party is joyous jitterbug of a party track.
The Shake-’em-On-Downers began as a busking quartet of young musicians in 2011 and is now made up of New Zealand School of Music graduates Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa (drums), Robert Henderson (double bass), Michael Costeloe (trumpet and vocals), Cameron Kidby (trombone), Robert Laurent (guitar) and Emma Wollum (accordion and vocals).
Also in the septet is saxophonist, clarinettist and vocalist, Oscar Laven who performed in Gisborne last weekend as part of the Sunday concert series at Tairawhiti Museum.
